"There is something bigger than you going on here" what does this mean?

All self help books say this to help get someone motivated or get them through the pain. Self help in general! What does this mean, what do they mean by this?

Please dont be a smartass. I'm really asking, as I've never got it.

It means that you are not the center of the universe. In general, most things that occur are indifferent to you even though they effect you personally. Therefore, you should not take things personally. This includes your interactions with others. It means, you fit in to something larger but you are not the hub of everything.

You have to take a long perspective and understand that 99% of the time, the people around you are doing their best and aren't intentionally trying to get in your way or upset you or ruin your day - even if though that's the net effect of their actions. Once you realize that the world isn't a place where you're constantly under intentional personal attack from others (therefore requiring that you extract revenge or "stick up for yourself" constantly), you'll have a lot more peace and compassion for others and yourself.

Generally I think it's talking about seeing the "big picture" and how if you look at the world around you you'll find what you're magnifying as the negatives in your life are sometimes not as horrible as they seem when you focus in on them.

Really I'd have to read it in context to get a full interpretation, but that's just how I took it.
