bringing a new born out to a baby shower.

How long should you wait to bring a new born out and about like to Walmart, baby showers, my job ,etc.? Like I'm due may 8th we have a baby shower (boyfriends niece's)  to go to on the 13th. If my baby comes before or on his due date is it ok to take my son out to the shower? Probably stupid question but one of the old lady's at my work told me I had to wait a few weeks before taking him any where's in public.
