5 month Baby cries with eyes closed while sleeping? Only stops if he breastfeeds.

Hi all!
So my 5 month old is EBF. He will cry after falling asleep and will not stop until I put him on the breast. Then he suckles a little and falls back asleep. My question is....is he asleep while doing this or awake with his eyes closed and crying? He does this during naps too. Eventually if I don't put my breast in his mouth he will open his eyes and cry then sometimes will stop crying and look around. What causes this?

My 5 month old starting doing this.. he's teething and likes to be close when he 'wakes up' in pain x

My little guy just starting doing this the last couple nights. I can only guess it's a comfort and developmental thing. I know the leap he is in makes him want to feel close.

How did he fall asleep in the first place? If my girl falls asleep during a feeding and I take her off she'll cry until I put her back on and it's all very sleepy. I guess it's just because they've realised they don't have your boob in their mouth anymore. Think most of the time when she's like that it's comfort sucking. If he falls asleep some other way then cries then I have no idea sorry.
