normal for hubby to take off after baby?

So my fiancé and i were planning on him being off for the week after the baby is born so he can help me with the baby and our two dogs. This is my first child and my midwives have told me my body will need to heal a little bit before I walk my dogs and do a bunch of cleaning and running errands right away. I was hoping he could be off for a week to help with that stuff and also be with our son! His mother told him I'm not "living in the real world" if I think normal people take a week off after baby is born. I asked some of my friends with kids and they said it's normal, but his mom freaked out on the phone with him about it and said his dad never did that and it's not normal. Is this not a thing people do? I'm nervous being home alone right away with the baby and both my dogs while I'm trying to recover a little. My dogs pull very hard when I walk them and I don't have a yard. I also don't really have experience with a newborn and he has a daughter already so I thought he could guide me so I can get the hang of everything. AND btw he works 6 days a week, 11 hours a day so if he's not off I don't see him until like 8 at night. I also have a job but am obviously going to be taking off (I hope his mom doesn't think that's too lazy🙄)
