I've been talking to this guy as a friend only for the last 4/5 years! We speak on and off and we talk about work or other casual things! We only talked when either of us couldn't sleep and found the other person online.. that's how it started off.

Now he's had a girlfriend the whole time and once he unintentionally friend zoned me. He thought I was wanting to go out with him when really I was seeing a guy but he got the wrong end of the stick!

My older sister, although I've already told her before who he is, went through my phone messages. She saw our chats and there's nothing even to hide and she says I could get in trouble with his girlfriend and I didn't see how as we never flirt we just occasionally talk. 
Now she's kind of ruined my view on this guy because after seeing a few conversations she is like " oh he definitely wants to bang you "

Am I wrong for messaging him, does it sound odd for a guy to be doing that when he has a girlfriend? I don't want to cause trouble !!!

I would think it's wrong. I have had this happen to me twice. Just friends and texting turns into much more real quick. If I was his girl I would be upset.

The GF here! Not in your situation but in my own... I was randomly cooking dinner one night my fiancé was taking a shower and I saw a name pop up on his phone of a girl I didn't know... I'm so fucking sorry but hell no you stay away as far as you can from someone in a relationship ... I figured out who she was on fb because I realized that she was a girl who he had just met at a family function I wasn't able to attend.... apparently they were family friends... so she thought it was innocent but I did not like one bit of it... I messaged her myself and she told me that nothing was going on they were just friends but I told her I didn't care I wanted her to stay away because as far as I'm concerned any friend of my fiancé that I don't know or haven't met of the opposite sex is not ok with me...

I wouldn't be upset if I saw my fiancé texting another girl and it wasn't flirty at all. Granted, all the girls (all like two) my fiancé texts are girls that are mutual friends and people I see regularly so I think I it would definitely be different if I didn't know them. Idk. Maybe be straight up with him and ask if his gf knows about you, and then see where you're comfortable in this friendship and maybe set some boundaries

My so has quite a few girls he talks to on a regular basis, from work, he never hides these conversations when they pop up and if I wanted to go on his phone I could (I have my thumb unlock on his phone) but never seen the need too. My thoughts are if a new girl pops up from no where then they are only after one thing but he was close to quite a few girls before me so who am I to tell him he can't talk to them. Most of the time they ask him relationship advice which I take as a compliment towards our relationship. I just wouldn't read too much into it sounds like a friendship to me.
