To sweep or to not?

Question

I'm 37 weeks and today at my appt. Doctor said I'm at a loose 1cm and 70% thinned. She said I'm ahead of most first time mom's, and then went on to tell me they usually start sweeps at 38 weeks to prevent going past due date. Would you guys suggest the sweeps? I don't wanna go into labor if I can help it before my due date, and certainly wouldn't want to go over either. I would prefer to let my daughter come at her pace. Opinions on sweep?

Sweep is like walking and other forms of induction. If baby isn't ready baby won't come. But sounds like you also just want to wait n let baby come when baby comes. So if that's how you feel just wait it out and let baby come when baby is ready.

I would hold off. 40 weeks is full term. Give your body a chance to get ready on its own. Dr.s aren't always right and many tend to rush things. If you and baby are in good health there's no need to push for anything earlier than 40 weeks.

With my third baby, my dr. checked me at 36 weeks and I was 6-7cm dialated, fully effaced and -1 station. He told me to go to the hospital that night because I was in labor and was going to have the baby. Had I done so they would have said I was in active labor (due to my dialation) and probably swept and/or induced me if I hadn't progressed.  I chose to go home and wait it out. Baby stayed in another two weeks. He was born naturally and weighed 6 lbs. 4 oz. and was healthy. I hesitate to think what would have happened if he had been forced to come 2 weeks earlier as per the Dr.s suggestion. Don't rush things. Biology is at work. Trust that the baby will come when he/she is ready.

Their sucking reflexes develop best in those last few weeks. I know first hand as I had a 35 and a 36 weeker before my third child, and they didn't latch or feed nearly as well as my full term baby did. (All babies are different but that is my experience).

You're not even full term until 39 weeks(meaning your baby continues to benefit for being inside you)  and there's nothing wrong with going past your due date unless there's some medical reason. Pregnancy is 42 weeks and your due date is an estimate. Doctors seem to want to induce at the drop of a hat these days. You can be dilated and efffaced like that for days or even weeks.  I say skip it.

If she does it yur gonna go into labor, I did with my son, I wasn't even having pain nothing she checked me did the sweep and I went straight into labor right after

I feel like it's more of a placebo effect anyways. Baby will come when he or she is ready no matter what you do!

I wouldn't until maybe 41 weeks. Post due is 42 weeks and beyond. You still have so much time. There's no need to rush it.

I wouldn't, its actually never been proven to work. If baby and body are ready it may help, if not its pointless. There really is no harm in saying goodbye to your due date. Check put evidencebasedbirth.com they talk about membrane sweeps.

Sweeps don't always put you in labor for me at 41 weeks it did nothing.  However it can start labor.
