can someone please explain the bleeding after birth?

First time mum with no idea and yesterday I was told that you bleed for 6 weeks after birth and have to wear mater out pads. Do you really bleed for that long. I just bought some stayfree maternity pads but they don't have wings will that be ok?

No its going to be like you opened an artery lol basically when you get pregnant your body make enough blood for both you and the babies to stay alive. Well when you give birth and after. all of that blood has to go somewhere and because the babys not there it goes out of you. Thats why your period stops, that's where it goes then all of the uterine lining comes out till your back to normal.

You can bleed anywhere from 10 days to 6 weeks. Everyone is different. I would consider taking a baby class at your hospital? These are definitely things you should know and be prepared for.

I know, right? It's so silly, I consider myself fairly educated but I never realized until getting pregnant (and going on this app) that it doesn't end with pushing baby out.  No one talks about these things and they're certainly not in movies! I have to deliver the placenta also? Oh and it could explode inside me and cause a stroke if not all of it gets out?! My uterus could tear?! Jeez...

I've always used 2 pads at a time for the first couple of days and then the bleeding slows. It's just like a very heavy period but usually slows after a few days. I bled for 6 weeks with my 1st, 3 weeks with my 2nd and we're on day 3 with 3rd but I don't think I'll bleed for much more than 2 or 3 weeks this time.x

I bled for just under two weeks. It's like a very heavy period, I had some clots aswell. I would suggest getting pads with wings though.

For me when I had my c-section, I bled longer than with my vbacs. With the vbacs I bled normal heavy day for about 3 days and then it turned into light days for about a week. But I'm guessing it all depends on the woman and her body.

I bled for like a week, but started bleeding again at my 4wk postpartum doctors visit when she placed my mirena. That was almost 7 years ago, hope I don't bleed long after giving birth this time either.

Every woman is different and every pregnancy is different.. pads with wings, no wings, depends, over night pads .. it's all about what you are more comfortable with.. definitely no tampons till actual first period not pp bleeding, and your uterus is retracting and healing and they have been known to cause infection . My first was a vaginal birth I blead for 3weeks my second was a C-section and I blead for 3 weeks also.. know people that only blead for one week.. sorry I'm not more help but remember your comfort is main thing as you really won't have energy like you think you will waking up every two to three hours for feedings.

After my csection it was only like 2 weeks.  After my VBAC it was close to 4-5 weeks.  I've heard some women are buying the Depends that look like underwear so they don't have to worry about ruining their own underwear.  I always used a bunch of the overnight with wings pads.  But we're all different.  My SIL stopped bleeding right after leaving the hospital.
