Children & Shoplifting Communities: WWYD? Doxxing justifiable?
Not too long ago I remember coming across a shoplifting community on Tumblr. These people would shoplift - sometimes totaling thousands of dollars - and photograph their "hauls" then post them to share with tags such as #stickyfingers or #lifthaul under pen names like Lifting Lizzy, liftingyourspirits, etc.
Things like bras, makeup, toys, socks, designer clothes, etc are often stolen from places like Ulta, Macy's, Bath and Body, & Sephora then shown off for some reason - popularity or brownie points? (Good luck seeing any necessities like food, toiletries, etc. You don't.) Sometimes the items are sold on Ebay for profit ("boosting").
Often the people are teenage girls and maybe young adults. The stereotype is rich to well off white girls who can afford it and obviously don't need the makeup or clothes. Some even admit to being able to do it easier because they're overlooked as white girls while security will follow a group of teens of color around. But not always - there are some who do steal due to poverty to gain money through "boosting". There's even tips based on stores how to steal.
🚨 BUT a group of 4chan doxxers (people who can hack to find your name, location, address, home phone, school, job, etc) starting with just their anonymous tumblrs, have been able to find the real names, phones, addresses, and schools of these girls. The purpose: to out them to their school or parents by contacting them. And some have! Resulting in a questionable aftermath for those shoplifters.
📝 Do you think being doxxed is justifiable for these shoplifters?
Some say it's a harmless crime, or they target companies that won't be hurt (but honestly maybe shop staff bear the penalty), some say they're 'fighting capitalism,' or it's not as bad as using drugs...

Just googling about it can easily find you the Tumblr pages, articles (Jezebel has one), and even the 4chan threads of the people grouping together to dox them. Good luck going down the rabbit hole if you do.
