TAKE THE SHOT

So there is this guy I feel like I have "a thing" for. He is really popular and literally every one in the world knows him because of his talent. We bother play the same sport and see each other at every competition. Of course I never said anything because cameras and reporters are all over him. I want to speak to him but I feel as if he gets a lot of people smiling in his face and want to "talk" to him. So (long story short) should I shoot my shot in the DMs? If so what should I say politely? I'm truly nervous due to the fact he is way out my league.
