Is it ok to post RIP posts on social media?

I read an article written by a woman who lost her husband. People had posted RIP messages on facebook so quickly that a lot of people found out through facebook before she had been able to tell them in person (including cousins, close friends etc.). She argued that people shouldn't post rip messages on social media for that reason. What do you think?

I think it is okay, but after a close family member posts about it first. Same goes for birth, pregnancy, and engagement announcements. Wait for them to post and then give your well wishes. If you cannot wait, send a private message.

I can see where she's coming from, but the only way some people find out about a passing is through social media. How long does she think they should wait? I could see maybe not posting a RIP messages as soon as the person is pronounced dead. Maybe wait a day or so? I'm just thinking of when someone I knew exclusively online died a couple of years ago, and the only way I found out was because people were posting RIP messages on her wall.

I posted about my sister after she padded away.  I didn't post until I could let as many family and close friends of here know first.  The people that did know (my uncle and Grandmom) didn't post anything until after they saw that I posted first.  The only reason I posted it on social media is because i couldn't let all of her friends know in person. I didn't know who all of her close friends were.

I think it's okay to do this after the funeral that way you don't run into problems like this. That happened to my great grandfather. Two of his siblings and then some other family memeber found out through Facebook about his passing. They were very upset and made sure people knew how mad they were at the funeral.

If I were in that situation, I would have told my family first and THEN post to social media because you know that is going to spread like wild fire.......

It's a tough one. I'm not on Facebook but this same thing just happened to us. My brother passed away 4 weeks ago and a lot of people didn't know until they saw the funeral details. The family obviously knew but a lot of his work friends had no idea how ill he was so it was a shock for them.  It's sad but unfortunately it's the way it is these days.

I personally find it disrespectful to that person who died if someone did that for me id want to slap them
