advice for first time going to the gynecologist?

I'll be going to the gynecologist Thursday for the first time to see the condition of a cyst on my ovaries. I'm 16 and I'm scared to death about this. What would they do? Will my mom have to be with me the entire time since I'm still a minor or can she wait in a waiting room? I would prefer it to be the minimum number of people as possible. Are they friendly and respectful about things? How will things play out? Is it clean and sanitized? What questions will they ask me? Any advice would be appricated!!

Well they'll mostly have you fill out the answers to the questions on the paper. You know that clipboard they give new patients? They'll ask questions on that like your cycle regularity, when you got your first period, are you sexually active, and other things like that. At this appointment, it's hard to tell what they will do. You'll likely need a transvaginal ultrasound but whether or not they'll do it at this appointment is a mystery. A transvaginal ultrasound is where they have this probe that goes in your vagina. A lot of offices have you insert the probe yourself. It doesn't hurt at all. They'll put a lubricant on it. They are generally pretty nice and understanding that it's kind of awkward. Not all doctors have the best bed side manner though. If you do not want your mother in the room, I don't think she has to be in there. Just maybe talk to your mom about it beforehand? There will probably be two people in the room. I don't think they will do a pap smear, but I will talk about it anyway to easy any worries of unknowns. For this they will put an instrument in your vagina so that it is open. Then they'll take a Q tip like thing and swab your cervix. That's it. It's very quick and mildly uncomfortable but it's over before you know it.

You can ask your doctor to walk you through everything they are going to do, generally they are pretty good with this. Your mom does not have to be in the room if you don't want her to be.
