Dilation?

Question

I had the doctor check my cervix today and she said I wasn't dilated at all, but that I was 80% effaced (thinned out) and she could feel the baby's head. Is this good news? I'm very happy my cervix is thin but shouldn't I be at least a little bit dilated at 38+3?

It's not uncommon for a first time mom to not dilate until labor! It can happen very quickly when baby is ready, don't worry.

I'm 39+5 and only dilated 1cm! Try not to compare yourself to others, your body knows what it is doing and will continue to progress in the proper time! It's frustrating, I know but hang in there! You're almost at the end!

I was still closed and not effaced all the way up until I was admitted to hospital. Then I started dilating quickly after cervadil was placed

Everyone and every pregnancy is different. If this is your first baby, it's definitely more normal to not be dilated at all. I'm 38 + 1 and was about 2cm and very thin at my appointment 5 days ago, but this is also my third baby. 
You can be dilated and effaced for weeks (or even months) and other people don't dilate or efface at all until right before labor!

I'm 39+1 and not dilated at all either but baby is super super low! Everyone's body is different. Some of us don't dilate until we acyually go into labor

I am 40 weeks exactly and only a 1 1/2, and 70%. I feel your pain! So done

Some women don't dialated til active labor others dialate a little over the last couple weeks. There is no right and wrong and neither is a sign of labor.

i am the same fully closed and its my second, w my first i dilated to 4 in no time and now i am 38+2 and nothing only painfull contractions
