buying ring for fiancée

Ever since then we have never really spoke about getting married. It's weird. Until one day I asked when were we getting married and he gave me this look and said "when we have money babe, I want a big wedding " and I said ok. So to this point I don't even know when we're getting married so I have not bought a ring for him. I've heard you're suppose to buy his ring until you're getting married. So am I doing the right thing? Cause I am lost.
