Are braids bad for my hair ?

I braid my hair up for the school year because I don't have much time to do it because of my extra curriculars. My friends are always telling me to leave my hair natural because braids are not always good. I let my hair breathe in the summer but once sports kicks I get them back because my hair needs heat protection. When I get braids I don't get super tiny micros, they're just the traditional sized braids most of the time. Besides I don't even know what to do with my natural hair and I want it way longer . But Is it okay for me to have braids in all the time or no?

The longest that I kept m braids in was for 4 months and my hair grew good 3 inches in a short amount of time (my natural hair goes down to the middle of my back)

Box braids are a form of a protective styling and the only way that your hair can get harmed is if you don't take care of the braids.

So as long as you aren't leaving your braids in for TOO long, you make sure you wash your braids thoroughly, you cover your hair while sleeping to avoid frizz, and you keep your scalp moisturized, there's no reason for your hair to have any issues.

In my opinion it's more about the type of braids and how tight the braids are. If you're keeping the braids in consistently during sports and not letting your hair breathe in between, its not necessarily good either because the braids are weighted and it pulls on your hair.  So, I think if you switch it up and maybe let your hair breathe for a month or so and then put the braids back in you may see more growth. I'm not a professional, I've just heard these things from others.
