Solids question!
My son is 19 weeks today and we began solids with him on the weekend. Just simple oatmeal cereal mixed with breastmilk or formula. Today was the third time we attempted and I'm just curious about his reaction.
First off, he was showing signs of readiness - or so we thought. He can sit up with support and can hold his head very well. He's also very aware of when we eat and always seems to be reaching and grabbing for our plates and watching us as we eat. He also has a huge appetite - about 35-40oz of breastmilk a day! So we thought we'd give it a try.
When we try to give him the oatmeal cereal, he doesn't really open his mouth for it. We didn't expect him to the first time but now it's been the third time and he still doesn't really open his mouth. We have to sort of jam the spoon in there. He will open slightly sometimes but never really that wide. He does spit some out but I don't think he spits everything out so he must be swallowing some, but doesn't always seem super eager for more. Should he be opening his mouth when he sees the spoon? Or will it take more time for him to make that association? He also sometimes turns his head away but other times he flails his arms about like he's excited and wants more. Could he simply dislike the flavor of the oatmeal? Maybe if we try with something sweeter like banana or carrots?
Anyways, I know this is a weird new thing for them regardless of whether they're ready or not. There must be a period of time where they have to adjust even if they are ready.
So I'm just wondering from others who have started trying with solids - what were the first few experiences like? What were some reactions? Do the babies typically open their mouths wide and seem eager/excited for more? Or do you get some grimasimg faces and turning heads away too? Trying to decide whether to continue or give him another couple weeks. Thoughts?
