Does it hurt the first time?

I'm 17 and don't know when the right time will be for me, before marriage or after, and it doesn't really matter as long as I am with someone I care about and who cares about me. But there is one question that I have regarding my first time? Will it hurt? I've read that it can and I wanted to know if it hurt for anyone when they lost their virginity and what they did about it (e.i what did you tell your partner).
