new to the Nuvaring

I've never been on birth control until a month ago and I got on it bc my periods are extremely painful. My doctor persuaded me to try the ring out and I did. She said I could wear it for up to 3-4 weeks and take it out for a week and put a new one in after. Well I started my period on day 3 of my rest week, and it is so painful I don't want to move. I thought birth control was supposed to help?? Should I change methods like maybe get the pill instead or what?? Did I wear it wrong like what's going on ? 😂
