"A few days ago I got a text from a friend. Her sister had messaged her to say that, at just 39 weeks, she was scheduled for a c-section. She explained how her doctor had done a growth scan and baby weighed close to 9 pounds. The doctor felt her pelvis was too narrow to push a baby out, that the baby hadn’t dropped and she was making no progress. Mind you, this mama was not even in labor yet.
My friend was desperate for more information because this just didn’t make sense to her. But her sister chose to reject any opposing information because of course, “doctor knows best.”
When the baby was born, it weighed less than 8 pounds and wound up in the NICU for hours without skin to skin and without nursing.
The reason ImprovingBirth exists is because this story is a dime a dozen. This scenario is happening in every corner in our country, every day, multiple times a day. And frequently without proper cause or support by national health organization guidelines.
ImprovingBirth is committed to solving the maternity care crisis and to do that, we need to organize.
Together we must object to a system that puts convenience, liability and financial concerns above what is best for mothers and their babies.
Together we are the driving force of socially conscious consumers who tell our story and use our voice to halt outdated and unsustainable practices and make large-scale, global transformations.
We will transform maternity care from a profit-oriented business into a purpose-driven enterprise where birth is revered and respected for what it is and for its enormous impact on the long-term health of all people."
