Questions about Reverse Cervix Dilation

Kyla
I arrived at the hospital in labor with my first child 9 cm dilated, I had an OB and a resident check me. The staff went into sort of a panic because I was a first time mom and one of the nurses had even made a snide comment that "we will SEE if I'm far enough along to be admitted" (she later came and apologized for her comment). Anyways because they were frantic they put my husband and I in a room and told us to let them know if I felt pressure with a call button until they found a nurse to put with us, but they had miscommunications and didn't send anyone.
I felt pressure and we pushed the button and pretty soon I had about 15 ppl in my room. Turns out it was my waters putting pressure on my cervix and when a nurse checked me, it broke. They said well you aren't quite 10 yet. So we waited a bit and I felt more pressure so I asked to be checked again and they said I had SHRUNK to 5 cm dilated. At that point I thought I can't go through transition phase again so I got an epidural and it took another 7 hours until I had my baby.
My questions are:
1) would the pain have been just as intense going through transition again if I had not got the epidural
2) would the labor have happened faster if I had not got an epidural
