TTC for a year and a half

So me and my boyfriend have been trying to have a baby #1 together. When he was younger he got kicked down there really hard and it ended up damaging him to where he ended up being 96% sterile. A couple years after him hearing that from the doctor he was able to have a son who is currently 9 years old. Is it possible that over the past 9 years that he is now 100% sterile or is their a chance of him possibly still able to have a child? I know we should go to a fertility specialist but he hates doctors and wants me to get checked myself. I have never gotten checked yet but I plan to after we get done with our family reunions since we have to go all the way up to PA from TX for it. Then shortly after we have to go to East TX from Fort Worth so that will be most of our money for a bit. Is their anything I can at least try before going to the doctor first?
