Thoughts on doulas?

We are thinking of beginning to interview, but would like to know how everyone's experience was, first. Trying to have pregnancy and labor that is as natural as possible.

I, without a doubt, would not have had the experience I did without my doula. I planned an out of hospital birth. I ended up with an induction at 41+1. She was there for me when I had multiple panic attacks due to the birthing location. She helped me stay focused and remember my coping techniques. She held space for my husband to be an unwavering support system. She reminded me to stay in control, to not be afraid, to get low with my noises. There is absolutely no way I would have made it through a 22 hour experience, pitocin, and two hours of pushing without medical pain relief if it was just me and my husband. I had no idea that you're alone for the majority of the time. A nurse came in maybe once every hour to look at a monitor. There would have been no constant source of encouragement if it wasn't for her. Yes, my husband was there, but I know how much she impacted his experience as well. I don't think he would have been as strong as he was if he was alone in a room with me going through that. He watched what she did and took over some of the massages. He felt comfortable going to the bathroom or to eat because she was there. He was able to look me in the eye and talk to me while she applied counter pressure. This is so long already, but I could keep going. 😉

Doulas can be expensive but before ruling them out just for that reason think about life on call. They need to leave their families at any given time, have 24/7 child care available, be there by phone or text constantly for your support. The price you pay is 100% worth it. Most people spend thousands on their wedding dress but don't want to pay for a doula. Is a wedding more important than the birth of your child? Is a dress you'll wear one time worth more than all the benefits a doula can provide?

Oh my god my doulas were amazing! They gave me support during my pregnancy, helped me visualize my ideal birth, were with me every moment of my labor, and rejoiced when my daughter was born! They helped me handle having to get an epidural and pitocin due to my cervix swelling and came to my house when I first went into labor so I could be home for as long as possible. 
They were amazing postpartum too. They came to check on us in my home and got me connected with a Lactation consultant when I had issues. That saved my breastfeeding relationship with my daughter!  
They weren't cheap but worth every penny.

I had the best labor and delivery with my doula. If she wasn't there, I honestly don't think I could have done it, especially not unmedicated
