Have I been taking the pill wrong?

I started the pill last month on the first day of my period. On that day I started on a sugar pill, not a hormone one (the directions said to always start in the red section which is the sugar pills) I have now finished that pack and started on the next one in the sugar pills. I am 5 days into the sugar pills and I haven't gotten my period. Have I been taking the pill correctly or do I need to see my doctor?
