I know what it stands for but what actually is it? I've seen people on this app that it isn't just kinky sex it's a whole life style. What does that actually mean? I'd love an answer from people who love this lifestyle.

because dominance, submission, sadism, machoism, bondage and discipline can be used in a lot of ways that are not always for sex or in the bedroom. 
your submission to your partner can be acted out in a lot of ways, not just sex
and your dominance of your partner can be acted on in a lot of ways besides sex
people who enjoy these things sometimes make them part of their lifestyle, as opposed to just something they do in the bedroom or during sex. 
when my partner tells me to brush my teeth, or gives me a treat, or when I ask his permission, it is part of our dom/sub lifestyle. i'm his little puppy girl.

It depends on the dynamic. The most common is Dom/sub. But there are others. And for people who are really into it, it becomes a part of their lives. It's the whole exchange, not just the bedroom.
