How much of an effect do tampons have on cramps?

Question

Is it possible that you could have an extremely light period with bad cramping simply because you have a tampon in and the tampon is causing all of the cramping? Or are you already cramping because you're menstruating and tampons intensify them? I'm just trying to figure out if I'm tampons guarantee cramps even if you have a light period or do they just intensify cramps if you have a normal period?

When I wore tampons my cramps were lay in bed on pain pill worthy. Like I couldn't even move. When I switched to a cup my cramps stopped completely.

to my knowledge, tampons making cramps worse is an old wives' tale. but it always made sense to me, if your body thinks a foreign object is in it, it will try to expel it. apologies for giving you conflicting answers. just sharing my knowledge based on what I have read v what I think logically.
