Prepping for Cloth Diapers

I'm a first time mom to be, and cloth diapers is the route I wanna go 100%. I know it might not work out or might be too much to keep up with, but I really want to put my all into it. Just have a couple of questions for all the experienced cloth diaper Momma's..

Do all cloth diapers need inserts?Are some inserts better than others?

Which brand for cloth covers are highly recommended?

Are newborn ones as simple as I read about?

Obviously it can get messy, but has the mess ever scared you out of doing it?😬
