Justus Interuptus and Assertive Communication: Should we change the way we talk to get heard?
Women tend to get interrupted far more than man, especially in corporate settings and women of color tend to get interrupted most of all.
There is research to indicate that though this is obviously in part due to implicit bias, this could also be due in part to how women are socialized to speak; using up-speak, more dependent clauses, more apologies, longer pauses in between phrasing, starting statements with questions, etc.
In the study of the Supreme Court on interruptions, it found that the female justices were actually able to adapt the way they speak to talk more assertively. This didn't even out the number of interruptions, but it curbed it significantly.
Organizations like Bossed Up give courses to women to teach them to talk assertively to help them get ahead but this can bring criticism from some:
Should we as women change the was we speak, or should we try to speak out to make people respect the way we speak, regardless of the number of dependent clauses we use? After all, it's not wrong. It's just different from men.
