How do you know you're in labor?

How do you know you're in labor? For my period I've never gotten stomach cramps only backaches so what if I have back labor? Doesn't it just feel like a backache? I'm afraid contractions will start and I won't know right away

12h before delivery that was at the moment i put my foot into the hospital door it was that intense that i could not walk anymore. The contractions were that strong that i felt like every muscle was squeezing my uterus and no more muscle was left to move my feed. I was even desperately looking for something to hold as i had the feeling that pain will cause me to faint. Luckily a old security guy was super quick with a wheelchair. 
The hour before at home it felt like somebody pressured my uterus. Like lots of hands are squeezing from each side very regularly. I started measuring the frequency not the intensity. Once i had every 7min or 5min (can remember) i called the taxi.

I had a miscarriage, which literally sent my body into labor, and with my period I only ever had back cramp so yes you will get back labor but not only back labor, it will feel like an uncomfortable little ache, then it will keep feeling more achy, then it will feel like your having the worst period cramps of your fucking life I was crying and hyperventilating and I didnt want my fiancé to touch me cuz somehow it made the pain worst, then you will feel like you have to take a poo, but that is when you know you are ready to push I can't tell much about the pushing cuz I was only 10 weeks when we lost them so they pretty much just fell out. Hope that helps
