Doula or not?

This is my first pregnancy. I'm planning to deliver in a hospital and was wondering if I should get a doula. What are some of the pros and cons? How much is it typically (I'm in California)? What would be some things I ask them before I hire one if I should hire one?

When I was a birth doula about 20 yrs ago, I would charge $300 for the first 24 hrs, $450 flat rate for any time after that even if it went into a second or third day (all concerned calls to me pre labor were free). I also stopped by a couple days after the birth at home to check on the mum and give her resources if she needed any at no extra charge. If they wanted to hire me as a postpartum doula, it really came down to what they could afford and what their needs were. Some mums could afford $30/hr, others only $5/hr. I haven't practice in over 10 years, but I believe now some hospitals provide them and they are covered by insurance.

The nurses at my hospital were great and I had my husband and mom nearby as well. My doctor is also great with bedside manner. If I didn't have support otherwise eg no family nearby, single or husband deployed or not with great bedside manner, or a dr I didn't like so much then yes I'd absolutely get one.

I was really considering getting one, I ultimately didn't because I had enough people as a support system. You should look for student doulas if you're concerned about the cost.

im a postpartum doula so I help ladies after they give birth and I'd say its beneficial, having someone there who knows what to expect is always a good idea. their job is literally only to support you! prices range from low to high so i cant give a real estimate, I would do some intense research on doulas in your area. good luck!!
