For every year you are in a relationship you should wait 6 months before entering another. That way you don't subject anyone to being a "rebound". For example, my ex called it quits after 2 years together, I didn't begin dating till a year later and wasn't in a relationship for an additional 6 months. It worked out beautifully since I'm now married and expecting a son with SO if 6.5 years. I gave myself plenty of time to move on and heal so I could love again without baggage.

I think waiting a couple of months is always a good idea. You may feel ready to date earlier but then you find you actually aren't so a few months is a good time frame.
