Spotting instead of period?

Hey all! My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for quite a while (I'm talking years) with nothing yet. For the past 2 years or so my periods have been pretty normal with a few days variance. This month I was late by about a week. Today is day 5, but I havent had an actual period at all, just light spotting the past 5 days. So, silly question, 6 nights ago I noticed a bit of spotting and put a tampon in because I figured by the morning it would be blood city. And although I haven't had anything more than spotting, I have still been using tampons (and yes, changing them every few hours). Am I like, blocking my period or something? Do I need to put a pad on and let it flow, or is this maybe something else?
