1) Don't force it, if it's not gonna work it's not gonna work. 
2) Happiness is internal. A relationship, or lack thereof, can't make you happy. You have to work/focus on yourself to be happy.

People aren't always who they seem to be and you won't always notice it right away!! I in a relationship for almost 3 years before things got bad and he showed his true colours. He started getting really mad and yelling at me for no reason. Then one day he threw me into a standup pantry cupboard then choked me against a fridge in front of his mother. Needless to say that was the last time we physically saw each other! To this day I still get scared when a man raises his voice in the slightest I freeze and go into flight mode and if I can't avoid the raised voice I panic!

You can't control how other people end up treating you in the end, but you CAN control how you let it effect you and how you move on from it. 
It's not your S/O's responsibility to make your life 100% happy and perfect. It's not realistic and perfect doesn't exist. It's not their responsibility to FIX you or any issues you may deal with, but just to support you and encourage you.
