How do you deal with playtime politics?

Question

so today I was at the park with my son having a lovely time. My son is three and a kid around the same age decides to run over to him a drags his nails down his arm. His Mum tells the kid off so I think ok sorted. Anyway then we have at least another 5 occasions with this kid attempting to bite scratch and push my kid off play equipment. Again in a very soft tone he gets told off. The next time he goes to push my son so he pushes him away. For the first time. The mum then said you kid just pushed mine over! You've got to be kidding! I then state that yes my child has had enough of your child's spiteful behaviour and lashed out. This mum is then in the park crying over what I've said with her friend.
What would you have done I know they're only young but surely they still need discipline?

I would have told the kid off my damn self he first time.. wtf. We're in a park setting where multiple RESPONSIBLE adults are monitoring their kids, if u see something say something. That's what we teach our kids right? 
Understandably, yes they're children, however even children with mental illnesses know right from wrong, if the child is in the wrong they get punished period.

I agree with you. The kid obviously wasn't listening and your kid reacted. Nothing wrong with that unless your kid started being a bully or did it excessively.

Your kid has every right to defend himself. Does she just expect him to keep getting physically assaulted by her kid and do nothing?

That mum needs to get over herself. Your child sounds very well behaved for putting up with it for going that long without retaliating. The other child is lucky but also needs to learn that not all kids are as well behaved as yours and some will hit back the first time.

I always give my step daughter a chance to speak for herself if someone does something to her but if she feels uncomfortable I will say something to the child myself I dont even go for the parent because half the time I dont know who the parent is or they aren't even paying attention to correct the behavior. My SO tells her if someone is physically hurting you and wont leave you alone you have full permission to defend yourself and you will not get in trouble. she doesn't ever defend herself so if she does she has a reason and I dont care what the other parent has to say if your kid is hurting mine and won't leave her alone well your lucky if my step daughter handles it herself because i wont be as nice.

I dread these situations.  Honestly I'd tell the mom that my child defends himself from abusers young and old. We teach him to use his words to say "no" andnwhen that doesn't work they have to defend themselves.  The other mom is a wingnut

I'd have told her and her child off the 3rd time he tried touching my child. Then when she cried, I'd have not cared and she can play the victim all she wants. Her and her friend could kiss my behind

I would have said something after the third time that kid touched my child to the mother about her child, after saying something, nicely of course, to both kids about keeping our hands to ourselves. It's the teacher in me I guess. If she had an issue then I would politely remember her that she is lucky it's me pointing it out. The next kid/parent might not be so nice when her kid goes to hurt someone else.
