Are you happy getting the IUD?

I'm 49 and peri menopause. I'm divorced and never had to use birth control because my ex had a vasectomy.  Are you happy with having an IUD? Would you do it again?

I'm 42 and peri menopausal.  My iron levels plummeted and I was getting joint pain as a result.  Gynaecologist suggested the Mirena as treatment for heavier periods and I had it inserted 2 weeks ago.  I know everyone is different but I personally have felt an almost instant benefit (24 hours later).  I realise now I must have been oestrogen dominant as the progesterone in the mirena has balanced my hormones and I actually feel more energised.  I'd been dragging myself around.  It's early days of course but so far I'd do it again at the drop of a hat.  I've had two children and I had my Mirena inserted on day 12 of my cycle.  It was no more painful than a smear/pap test (my gynaecologist applied a local anesthetic and I took ibruprofen.) Got my period yesterday and much lighter so perhaps this will work for me, fingers crossed.  Mirena can now be used as HRT should I need it and apparently I'll only have to apply an oestrogen cream once that becomes necessary as I enter menopause.  Best wishes to you x

I wouldn't get another iud. Upon request for removal the midwife at the clinic broke the string, after several years of being in place some tissue grew and held in firmly put. I had to go under anaesthesia to have it removed, I was told they may find it all or it may break and I would not be able to conceive with any piece remaining. Guess what. They removed two thirds. Had a second surgery 2 months later after the missing piece was found in the transvaginal ultrasound. Woke up from the 2nd surgery, to my fiancee and doctor ready to hear I could start ttc.  Their eyes were watery -- I was still woozy. The second piece WAS NOT FOUND.

I'm pretty happy with mine. I have a terrible memory, so remembering to take a pill at a certain time everyday and scheduling constant checkups, would never work for me. With the IUD, I don't have to worry about anything. I check my strings once a month, and I have a doctors appointment once a year. Also it makes my period lighter and my cramps less painful. It's also extremely effective and long lasting. I couldn't ask for better.
