I know a couple who didn't use protection for around 7 years, not to try to get pregnant, just because they didn't want to. then randomly out of nowhere they were pregnant, completely unplanned.

I have been with my partner over 10years. We were always careful. Pill and condom and then when I got off the pill just condoms or the morning after pill if needed... then we decided to start trying... coming on 12 months now... starting tracking ovulation properly for just about 7 months and still not pregnant.
Now I think why were we so careful all those years ago if it is this hard to fall pregnant?!
I'd say you've just had good timing. It's only a short window for it to happen. Then so many other contributing factors that can stop it.
Those who "accidentally" fall pregnant are super lucky.
