Family issues

So my partner and I aren't religious and didn't want a big wedding so we decided to elope and have a handfasting just us on a beach and we thought it was the most magical thing we have experienced upon returning home we told parents on both sides who were delighted but overshadowing it is the rest of the family his sisters his friends etc thought we were weird confused over why they were excluded and didn't get the whole handfasting thing am I selfish in just wanting the day about us and how will I get everyone else to take it seriously and be just as happy as we are i should also note his sisters are all in their 40s married with kids of their own as I'm 25 there's quite an age gap and we have never really bonded any advice would be appreciated .
