When did it stop hurting?

Ladies. First breastfeeding is HARD. I gave up early with my first because it was so hard and frustrating for both of us. I'm determined to do better with this one, but I'm starting to get discouraged. So, I need a little help. Tell me when did your little one finally latch and breastfeed well? And how long after baby was born did your nipples callous and stop hurting (and do you have any tips to make them less sore in the mean time)?

First lanolin cream will be your new best friend. It's the only thing that helped sore dry nipples. Also, warm wet washcloths help soreness and engorgement. Second Have patience with yourself and your baby. Breathe! It's a learning process for the both of you! Third invest in comfy nursing tops and bras and a nippy nursing pillow. They make feedings much easier! I had to help my little one for a few months with latching properly. She really had trouble her first week. But I just kept working with her to latch the right way. You can do it momma. Find a quiet peaceful place to nurse each time until you get more comfortable. I got frustrated with my little girl nursing but was determined to be successful at it. Now 1 year later she's still nursing. I also read the book "the complete book of breastfeeding" it really has a ton of helpful info! Good luck momma 💜

The real painful latching stopped after about a week, after that it was a lot easier. I feel like people telling you it shouldn't hurt are doing you a disservice, it hurts initally period, my daughter had a good latch right after delivery & it still hurt. But it definitely gets better. Hang in there you got it!

It took about a month and multiple appointments with a lactation consultant and breastfeeding support group. My daughter had tongue-tie and once we got that clipped, it started getting much easier. Hang in there.

I'd say it took a good month until the pain started to subside... BUT! Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple butter helped as well as using Medela Thera-Shells all day and night so my nips didn't stick to my bra/shirt/etc. I also used nipple shields that helped for the first latch. Sometimes I'd leave them on the whole time and other times I'd take them off once baby latched and was suckling just fine, at that point it doesn't hurt as much. Hang in there Mama, it does get better!!!

I used a nipple shield for the first 10 weeks due to cracked, bleeding nipples on day 1. It saved my breastfeeding relationship. I weaned baby back to my breast within a couple days and had nipple pain for about a month- not terrible, just sharp shooting pains randomly. After that, breastfeeding didn't hurt. I loved Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple butter.

My nipples never cracked or bleed. I switched sides a lot during his feedings until my nipples became used to it.  It took me about a week. He latched on better after the 3rd day and after that it's been a breeze.

For me it was about 2.5-3 weeks. My mom used to be a lactation consultant and here's what she told me: 
Whoever said breastfeeding shouldn't hurt is a liar. There is always an adjustment period and chapped nipples are normal. If you start sucking on any part of your body for 8-10 hours a day it's gonna hurt. Duh. 
Make sure your nipples are DRY (no saliva) before putting lanolin or anything on them! Blast them with a blow dryer if you're in a hurry! Trapping moisture under that cream is a bad idea! 
Different creams work for different people so if one's not working, try another. 
Drink a crap ton of water. Not only is this good for your supply, it helps your skin heal quicker.

It's hard for the first 4-6 weeks. You get used to it. I think the discomfort lasts different durations for each women. Stick with it and I promise you that you will not be sorry. Do be aware of signs of mastitis or infections. Not common, but they can happen. After you get through the first few weeks and your supply is established, it will  be the easiest and most convenient thing you ever did. Mark my words. Hang in there, mama! ❤️
