video watching for long car ride?

I know that we need to limit screen time for our babies but we are visiting family a few hours away. my baby is not so little like last year when she would sleep most of the time. I guess most people have I pads or tvs in their car to use. I was wondering if there was something a little cheaper and simpler to let her watch? we won't have a way to connect to WiFi during the drive and sometimes we lose service on our phones, so maybe something I could download movies or shows on? any suggestions are appreciated!     *last resort to toys and books*

I thought it was obvious that this post wasn't geared towards parents who don't allow screen time. I'm not going to just shove a screen in her face, but if she starts fussing like she often does if we are in the car for too long, I'm not going to let her be upset for four hours. thanks for the advice though.

we road tripped for 12 hours with a 1.5 year old and 3 year old with no electronics and it was totally fine. We brought their favorite books and toys, and we made a couple more stops so they could stretch their legs and burn some energy. They did great.

You can download movies on Netflix now. My son does that but he also crashes everytime we get into a car.

We've never used electronics on road trips and my parents never did with us girls either. A few hours away isn't a bad road trip at all. If needed, you could always sit in back with them to help keep them entertained. But toys work just fine! I wouldn't introduce screens just because of a small road trip.

How old are your kiddos?  My son is seven months, not interested in electronics or shows, and the last car ride he had a field day with empty water bottles.  I had never given him one prior, so I guess it was like a new toy, but he loved crinkling it.  No judgement to anyone that does put on a show, just thought I would mention that incase your little one is as entertained by it as mine!  Good luck and safe travels-

As a kid, it never even occurred to me to watch anything other than the world going by outside. I got absorbed in my own thoughts, daydreams & mind creations, and it provided me with mental down time, which I think is important. I think the more hooked our kids get on instant-gratification delivery systems like TV & video games, the less able they are to think up ways to entertain themselves, which can actually make our jobs as parents harder in the end. I say hold off on the electronics until our kids have had a chance to practice working those self-entertainment muscles.

You can download shows (to watch offline) from Netflix and Amazon video if you have either of those services. Also a portable DVD player works great since you can just bring your own DVDs. We have the kind that straps to the back of the seat so they don't constantly push buttons if it's a handheld one.

My vehicle came equipped with a DVD player in it. But you can get portable ones. If you decide a tablet I would get some sort of mount for the back of the headrest so the child doesnt drop it.
