What is homophobia?

Another post sparked me to ask this and as it's a poll I thought people would be honest. 
••••• couldn't write any longer but "a fear" is followed with homosexuals and the same for "prejudice and dislike"••••••

A phobia is a conditioned, irrational fear response. It is not just simply a fear. 
I have a fear of heights, because they make me feel uneasy. I have arachnophobia because due to traumatic experiences I have developed a conditioned and irrational fear response to them. 
That's the difference between 'fear' and 'phobia'. 
Now to get on with the actual question.
"Phobia" in terms of LGBT+ phobia refers to the conditioned mindset that oppresses LGBT+ people. It refers to behaviours/mindsets/attitudes that stem from homophobic ideology in our society. 
It is not about fearing LGBT+ people. You absolutely eejits.

I get into this debate all the time. People seem to think homophobic means you're deathly afraid of LGBT people. No. Obviously the root word comes from phobia, but colloquially we use it to describe an extreme dislike and intolerance of the community. Just because you're not running in the other direction screaming, doesn't mean you aren't homophobic.

Homophobia= Discrimination, prejudice, fear, dislike. Its also hilarious when people try to hide their homophobia by saying "im not scared" you're asshole, go back to the 1800'.

I think the dislike and prejudice kind of plays into the idea of "fear" and vice versa. If someone is prejudice towards a group of people, they'll fear their prevalence in society. In this case, those who "dislike" homosexuality will put effort into displaying their dislike to denounce it and kind of discourage people from accepting it. They're afraid for people to be openly in a relationship with someone who isn't of the opposite gender because it threatens their comfort zone so they do fear it.

Although a phobia is technically an irrational fear like a number of words or terms over the years it has evolved into meaning something else. It is now about hatred not fear, unless all homophobics secretly fear that they may be gay. 
It wouldn't actually surprise me if that is where it comes from, some people are taught that being gay is bad and should be hated, they then have an erotic dream about someone of the same sex, instead of realising that it is perfectly normal and one dream doesn't make you gay they have been taught that it is bad so they hate that part of themselves but don't want to admit to it. That leads to them treating openly gay people badly because of their own internal struggles and their lack of understanding. Once that fear and hatred has been drummed into society over multiple generations it makes it difficult to move forward. Then throw in things like religion and the hatred becomes volatile to the point of destroying lives.
