What is a "proper" age to buy your child a play station/Xbox?

What age did you buy your child a game console?

You can buy it whenever you want. Make sure you only get him/her games that are appropriate for their age. The console itself isn't the problem, it's parents who let 10 year olds play 18+ games!

Can the answer be never? Things like that should be earned and paid for by the person who wants to use it.  
Seeing how my nephews abuse the things that are given to them makes me not want to buy my son anything... But that may just be me.  I'm slightly old school when it comes to technology, wanting my kids to know how the real world works before they can play in a fake one.

I'd say around middle school age. Just monitor their game ratings and screen time if you're worried. My two little ones play my husbands old n64 and Mario cart on the wiiU I just limit it cuz they'd be there all day if I let them lol

He can buy it when he can afford it. I want to teach my future kids to work for what they want. They can do some work gardening for the neighbours or something like that to earn it.... this will teach them to be more responsable with their things,  knowing they had to work hard to get it.

My kids play the Xbox and ps4 but I wouldn't ever buy them their own console.  They only get to play on weekends in the mornings while hubby and I sleep in (my two wake up at 5.30am) and maybe a virgin the arvo if all our jobs are done.  They can have their own console once they've finished high school and can pay for it themselves.   My BIL is 16 and has his own console,  the amount of times his mother has taken it off of him because he's not studying for exams because he's too busy playing is ridiculous.
