When to get a dog for baby?

I really want a German shepherd (I had a mix but he passed away) I want my baby to have someone to grow up with and for the dog to protect my baby boy. When is the best time to get it so it's not rough with the baby and I can teach it to not jump or bite? My baby is due January 22nd

I would get the dog asap so he bonds with you first. You're the one who will be walking, feeding and caring for him, so your bond should be strong. Older dogs have established personalities, so I would recommend trying to find one that is good with kids.

Get one asap to train. You don't want to be potty training while having a newborn. I want another one and am due Jan 29th but I know it's too much for me to handle. We have a 5 year old with epilepsy and somehow our dog knows when a seizure is coming he WILL NOT leave her side. We got him when she was 3, now he lays his head on my belly I think he knows baby's there. Be careful make sure you socialize and bring the dog around lots of people and kids. Great dogs. Below is Apollo he is 1 and a half now :) very protective but the sweetest thing ever

Either before baby is here or once baby is about a year or so. 
Before means that they can get used to you, see you as master and get used to you being pregnant and eventually bringing a baby home. 
After a year means the baby will automatically be seen as part of the family and there will be no jealously from the puppies half. 
Although GS are easy to train, just remember they are puppies for a few years and that could be overwhelming while pregnant and bringing a new born home. 
Side note : they make the best friends!

First think if really really want that dog for you and your family. Don't place any responsibility on the dog to protect your son cos maybe it won't happen. 
I would get a puppy to grow with my son , but be very careful not to stress each other.
