Should high school athletes be punished for protesting during the national anthem?

Per Sports Illustrated Article, posted 9/28/17:   As President Trump continues to call on NFL owners to "fire" players who protest during the national anthem, a Louisiana high school sent a letter to student-athletes promising to punish students if they sit or take a knee during the anthem. 
Parkway High School principal Waylon Bates sent a letter to its student-athletes and their parents outlining rules for conduct during the national anthem.

I do not believe that students should be punished for kneeling during the anthem at games. It is a form of peaceful protest the students should have the freedom to engage in. As to whether or not these public schools legally CAN do that, I don’t know. I know public schools cannot force students to stand for the pledge, so there’s a chance this could fall under the same category.

We do not live in a fascist state, therefore these students have rights and it is illegal to punish them.

I think people need to focus on important crisis. Like freaking Puerto Rico that seems to be totally ignored because a bunch of privileged highly paid athletes don’t agree with the big privileged bully that runs our country.
