We tried to get pregnant for about 18 months
We tried to get pregnant for about 18 months. As I was 37 when we started, we sought treatment for infertility after 6 months of trying. After we’d completed all of the necessary testing, the first doctor told us IVF was our only shot. We decided to try a couple other routes first, including varicocele surgery for my husband and a second fertility opinion. The second doctor was more confident that IUI had a decent chance of working, especially when we saw the massive improvement in my husband 6 months after his surgery. We weren’t pregnant yet though, so we went back to the doctor to revisit our options and decided on IUI to start. I was anxiously awaiting my cycle day 1 so I could call the nurse and get my prescriptions, but after 3 days of waiting beyond when I’d expected my cycle to start, I took a test. And it was my first ever positive pregnancy test after the 40 or so tests I’d already gone through.
