Anybody else don’t care for marriage?

I’ve been with my boyfriend for 11 years, we’ve got 2 kids, a 9 yr old and a 1 1/2 year old. He eventually wants to get married once we’re settled; get our own house and what not. And I’m over here conflicted because I think it’s just a piece of paper, but I feel the pressure of getting married by family members.

Marriage is a legal commitment between two people providing many benefits. You can get those benefits individually without marriage, but it will cost a lot more money. The marriage certificate provides those things with a lot smaller price tag.

My husband was engaged before me. She died in a tragic car crash on her way home from her final wedding dress fitting. He didn’t get the call for hours because they weren’t married. They called her estranged parents. They chose when to withdrawal life support. They chose to bury her when she wanted cremation. He lost everything, all of their joint property and the life they were building together. Marriage is more than a piece of paper. It’s a contract that becomes a will, medical proxy, life insurance beneficiary, etc.. all with one document. I’m not religious. I don’t care if you choose not to marry. But then spend the money to get the legal protections worked out so you are both taken care of should the worst happen.

Marriage is a man made rule. It's not something we're forced to do or feel like we "should" do. It's 2017 and I'm thinking marriage is becoming a thing of the past. My grandmother-in-law always says "if it isn't broken, why try to fix it?" I like that. She's been with her man for 40 years. No piece of paper.

I got married because I wanted to be legally bound for legal convenience. It's a lot easier to handle some aspects of taxes/insurance/home ownership when you have a piece of paper to shove in people's faces. if you don't want a wedding, don't have one, just go sign the documents and have a date night! of course if where you live allows you to register as common law and that status gives you all the priveledges of legal marriage, don't need to bother really

I want a simple, small wedding. With a cheap dress that I will rent and small crowd. I’m not religious but it would be nice to experience a small wedding with my partner. We both want a small cheap wedding, no need to spend thousands on it.
