Samhain modern name Halloween.
I’m going to assume most people celebrate Halloween. If not you can still give your opinion.
Originally known as Samhain, Halloween is a Celtic holiday. Its origins came from Ireland and spread to Scotland. Around the time of Samhain people believed many things but mainly that the dead came back. It’s on October 31st because that was the end of the calendar and continued into November 1st. In Ireland there are still monuments and ruins that show the importance of the Celtic calendar. Newgrange is an example during the winter solstice, and people still come to witness it.
During Samhain people left food and drinks out for the dead and celebrated the new year but also was wary of the dead coming so the wore their own versions of costumes and masks and held bonfires in which they burned dead animals. This is only a brief part of it and there is a lot more to the history of Samhain.
It has come to my attention that not many people fully understand the history or Samhain and how much importance it holds to Irish traditions and it’s people.
Do you think celebrating it without proper knowledge is wrong the taking their culture and history out of proper context?
Is it because it’s so common and normalised to celebrate it, that it’s ok to ignore the history and importance it held at that time?
Should people who celebrate it be properly educated on the history?
