Are elective ultrasounds safe?

My husband and I want to announce our pregnancy at 15 weeks, the week of Thanksgiving. We were told we won’t have another ultrasound (we had one at 8 weeks) until 20 weeks. We wanted to give our parents an ultrasound photo of the baby.
We scheduled a 2D ultrasound at an elective ultrasound facility, but now I’m second guessing myself. Should I just wait it out or is this okay to do?

Totally do it!(: you are only pregnant with the baby once! And electives are so much more fun! They show you a 3D version sometimes and you get a longer scan than just a quick check. Except your 20 weeks one will be more of checking organs and things. But this elective will just be to watch the baby and find out the gender and enjoy the moment without feeling rushed!

There’s no data on the safety of ultrasounds to sufficiently say whether it’s safe or not. With that being said, unless something develops you may have only three ultrasounds including that elective one, so why not?! The elective places use the same technology as the doctors offices and employ trained and certified technicians. The biggest difference between a scan with them and with your doctor, is even if they pick up on something being “wrong” they can’t tell you because they’re not doctors and can’t make any diagnoses.
