Did you/Will you let your teenager have social media?

I don't know if I would but I am looking for other opinions.

Yup. I'd like to teach them how to utilize social media so they don't become adults, get social media and be complete and utter dicks on it. Internet etiquette will be important for me and my kids. I'd rather teach it to them while they're teachable

From 14 I’d allow my daughter to have certain social media. But it will be closely supervised my myself.

I'll teach them to be responsible and internet safe. I will also be heavily monitoring it because there are always outside forces when it comes to the internet.

I mean, it'll be at least a decade until a have a kid. 
Who's to say social media as we know it will even exist by that point? Technology is constantly progressing. 
Assuming it is like today, then yes I'll allow them to have social media accounts. But I will educate them on privacy, and recognising groomers.

Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat would all be fine as long as they proved to be trustworthy, but I'd advise them not to let others take images of them and put them on social media if they notice someone recording them or taking photos of them. You never know how people are going to use that photo. In our local news recently a kid took a photo of two white kids who were laughing together in class and put it on Snapchat and captioned it with "They said they hate n______s, they think it's funny". Multiple other students and the teacher confirmed that this did not happen in the context of the photo, but the students were suspended before the principal asked if this was what really happened or not. The principal apologized afterward for suspending them, but the damage is done. That photo is still being shared around our local schools and the two children now are receiving a lot of threats over it. 
It's definitely an odd situation but nowadays it's something I think about a lot. It's very easy to misconstrue a situation on social media and I've seen it a lot on Snapchat where people take photos of their friends and caption ugly things that they claim are being said when a lot of the time it's meant as a joke but can be very damaging and harmful to the children involved, so it's definitely something that I would warn a child about keeping an eye on.

I’m sure there will be another, much more invasive and all-consuming technological advance by the time Alf is a teenager. (The rate of advances is exponential and AI will be absolutely everywhere in about 7 years, likely in damn near everything we do.)

yes bc its a way for them to be able to connect with their friends like all their friends would be doing and i feel like it would ostracize them by not allowing it. i would trust that ive taught my child to be smart and savvy enough to handle the internet.
