Should it be illegal to put dogs into the bed of a pickup truck?

My bestfriend that works at the local vet clinic got their second dog in this week that jumped out of a moving truck. I personally think it should be illegal entirely, dogs are animals, trained or not it puts them, and other drivers on the road at risk.

Free roaming, yes. I know someone whose dog even jumped out of the window (he ended up being ok). Seems kind of crazy to leave the dog free in a bed of a pickup. I think I'd call the cops if I saw that on the road here.

I’ll never forget when I was driving down a highway at 110km/h and a German Shepard tried to jump out if the back and got dragged along the road and strangled...... when you see something like this you would want it to be illegal..

Not illegal, but they have to be safely secured or you get fined. 
We would put our dog at the farm In the back of the truck, so I imagine people would still do it without any restraints on their animal, but at least if they get caught they get smacked with SOMETHING. 
My dad lost a car window to a dog that got tossed out of the back of a pickup;(. Dog didn’t make it, and it happened because the owner had a wheeled tool box in the back that rolled into the dog and knocked him out. The guy got pegged with wrecking the window and the death of the animal, but nothing about how his stuff and dog hadn’t been properly secured which would have prevented it in the first place.

Free roaming yes. Tied down (not enough rope to go over the edge) with a place to lay, no. In a crate or something, of course not. I also don't think dogs should be allowed in the car with the window rolled down all the way. I've seen many dogs half out the window, and always feared the worst might happen. People need to use common sense.

I'm pretty sure there's a law (at least where I live)that you have to have to them tied up in a bed, which I what I do with my 100lb lab,  mostly just because he scares me too much to not tie him up

No.  It can be done safely if people follow the rules (it's quite strict here in Aus).  Leashes need to be less than a certain length and need to be tied in the middle,  not at the edges. If your dog can't reach the edge of the tray,  they can't jump.  They shouldn't be able to roam far at all.

I live in an area where there are a lot farmers and we often see dogs unsecured in the back of trucks. I’ve never seen one cause any trouble. Most seem to be having the best time of their life! 
My aunt had a dog when she was young that wasn’t trained to ride in the back of a truck and jumped out and hung itself. She took it to the vet but it was too late. 
So I think training plays a huge part.
