ladies and gentlemen, it's already beginning
There has been talk about levels of lead being considered safe, especially for children. we'll have not been able to find any evidence of the federal regulations here in the United States changing yet, but apparently big companies are taking this information and running with it claiming that the scientists have proven that higher levels are safe for the human body. Target is selling a Fidget Spinner that researchers have found to have 330 times the federal legal lead level limit for toys. Target is getting away with this by claiming that fidget spinners, even tho they are found in the toys department of the store, are not marketed to children. The federal legal limit for lead in children's toys is 100 parts per million, the center circle of the brass Fidget Wild Premium Spinner contains 33,000 parts per million of lead, as found by researchers. The center of the metal version of the spinner tested for 1,300 parts per million of lead. So because these fidget spinners are marked for individuals "14 years of age and older" Target's vice president of corporate responsibility said that they are not required to meet federal lead limits! Here is the issue... these fidget spinners are sold along side some star wars and my little pony toys... so if these fidget spinners get away with it, what's to stop other companies from doing the same things with other toys that they then claim are meant for 14 and up even tho they already know that younger children are going to want and or actually play with these toys??
Lead is very dangerous for children, it can impact mental development among other things. where as PIRG Education Fund is calling for a recall of these fidget spinners to be issued, because they state that they are not children's toys they might not be required to. sigh, from now on we are going to have to check the age requirements on toys to make sure that there's not a chance, then do more research if there is a chance. now as far as I know the federal regulations have not yet been changed, I pray that it doesn't. but this terrified me and I feel like other moms, fathers, aunt's, uncles, grandparents, older siblings, hell everyone should know that our new regime is not worried about public safety anymore, but is instead about making the next easy buck, even at our children's expense. how does this make you feel? please, let me know!
update:
I did not realize Target did pull the fidget spinners due to all the unwanted press of continuing their sale. but this is still an important issue because what about the next item that maybe won't get as much press? it's still something that should be talked about.
update 2:
I should have been more clear on what I feel like this is the beginning of. the EPA is being controlled by an individual with known ties to companies that disagree with a lot of regulations controlling them, causing him to change regulations in order to please these companies allowing them poison our environment legally. example of this would be using stronger pesticides in places like Florida to kill the mosquitoes even tho those levels of pesticides were originally proven to be unsafe creating the regulations to begin with. or the regulations on what can or cannot be used on organic crops or the length of time required before being able to grow organic crops on land previously contaminated by other pesticides. there have been a lot of scientists making claims that they have proven this or that and even tho other scientists have disproven their work they are relying on people believing them even tho they site their own work as proof. what makes this scary to me, is that they are getting a lot of support from people who believe them. the lead example I'm using is just the most recent example. I'm asking how people feel about they feel about this happening because of the effects this could have on our children.
