Why are interventions the norm?

Suzy

I’m a bit overwhelmed by the amount of women on here who voluntarily opt for unnecessary interventions...Hasn’t anyone here seen The Business of Being Born? It’s very surreal...we have all this knowledge at our fingertips, warning us of the risks associated with unnecessary intervention, and yet the vast majority of American women are still opting for induction, Pitocin, Epidurals and even scheduled C sections!? (Please note, I’m not talking about high risk pregnancies here..and this post is not meant to shame anyone.) Its just so odd to me...I know everyone on here cares deeply about their baby and themselves, which is why I’m baffled when women speak nonchalantly about their induced/medicated low-risk births. (I’m honestly disheartened too because I can’t find any stories here with which I can relate: nearly every birth story is ultimately the same: Pitocin drip, epidural, occasional c section...where are the women birthing the way their bodies intended?) I guess this post is just to see how well informed the community really is? If women were truly informed, would they still flock to the drugs without a second though? And if yes, WHY!?!?! How do we initiate a cultural change while conditioned fear still surrounds childbirth?

So far the comments have led me to believe that what I feared is true: MOST women are largely uninformed about the risks of unnecessary interventions, and how natural hormones positively affect labor/birth/postpartum. It seems rather than seek out information on how to cope with labor naturally, women will simply put it all on the line, without question, to avoid a pain that is misunderstood.
