Tampon pain?

Okay this is seriously weird (at least I think so). My LO is 2.5 months old and breastfeeding and I got an IUD places last week. I started a light version of my normal period yesterday and used a tampon like I always would and oh my goodness taking it out felt like I was ripping my inside out. I would seriously rather give birth again then take a tampon out. I’m wondering what could be the cause? Could it be because I’m breastfeeding and experiencing vaginal dryness? If so what can I do to make it more comfortable? I can imagine it’s due the IUD but I have no idea. Thoughts? Because I cannot stand to wear pads.
